Dunluce Castle

Dunluce Castle is a popular castle for visitors and photographers.  You have probably seen photos of Dunluce Castle for years - it's that well-photographed.  There are so many nooks and crannies to explore.

Dunluce Castle is a now-ruined medieval castle in County Antrim, which has extremely steep drops on either side, and where an Irish fort once stood.  The early Christians and Vikings were drawn to this location for its protection.

There is a pass through a sea cave which becomes landed stairs (and what a length of stairs) up the side of the cliff and into the Castle.  It is known as the Mermaid Cave and, unfortunately, was closed to the public when I was there.

And for you Game of Thrones fan, did you know that Dunluce Castle was used for the House of Greyjoy, Castle Pyke?

A VERY appropriate sign!!

If you don't have strong legs or thighs - start walking NOW!

Everywhere you turn there are stairs and if you like old castles, there are plenty of spiral stone staircases in Ireland!

Don't worry.  You'll be fine.  I managed it all and I'm SO out of shape!

After passing through Mermaid Cave, it's a quick walk up (above) or take livestock and supplies up the longer route (below).
