Faerie Trees

Faerie trees can be found almost anywhere in Ireland.  Traditionally, they are Hawthorne trees or sometimes an Ash tree.  They stand alone in fields and are commonly found with large stones circling its base, most likely to protect it.  "Protect it from what?", you might ask.  Actually, it is protecting YOU, as the faeries - also known as the "Fey" - don't want visitors around their trees or the surrounding land.

I found a large faerie tree on the way back from Drumacoo Church.  It was definitely standing alone with large rocks circling it.  It also had a rope to keep cars away.  I obeyed these not too subtle warnings and took photos from my car.

So what is the difference between a faerie and a leprechaun?

A leprechaun is the size of a gnome.  They bring only good luck to others and of course, they have a pot of gold!.  Leprechauns are known for their love of drink, music and dancing.

Faeries are nothing like Walt Disney has us to believe.  In fact, my tour operator said if he had Mr. Disney in front of him, he would punch him!  He was quite emphatic that Tinkerbell was an insult to Ireland's faeries and being an Irishman, Mr. Disney should have known better.  (Seriously? Who  doesn't love Tinkerbell?)

According to the tour operator, faeries can be either tiny creatures flitting around (and you would never notice them) or they may be adult size. . . maybe even driving your bus!  Faeries are tricksters and enjoy playing with humans. . . maybe taking your hat or moving your glasses.  They interact only when they want to, but don't try to encroach on their territory or they will call upon their magic to bring you bad luck!
